When our taxi collided with another coming from the opposite direction, our driver’s first reaction was not about how much damage the accident would have caused to his vehicle or to the other one, but a sudden exclamation of how there were Muslims in the other vehicle. Admittedly, that well might have been the reaction of some bystanders too. But even if that is assuming too many things, the fact did not escape us that in the current times, it is not too surprising to a Mangalorean – though it seems to have horrified the rest of Indians – that Hindu fanatics smashed up a pub and even molested women because pubbing is ‘not Indian culture’.

Where lies the connection? The taxi incident is a mere example for how Mangalore and other coastal districts of Karnataka have been ripped apart by religious polarisation. Far from its ancient and fabled sense of tolerance, today, talking to a boy from another community, sharing a joke between them at a bus stand – let alone romance between members of different communities – could spark of violence, localised first, and then across the state. And the state Bharatiya Janata Party government is doing its level best not to change this, to say the least.
