Indian writers writing in English

Even though I don't write fiction, the good part about it is that the Indian subcontinent is producing great novelists and short story writers. For the first time we had an Indian on the top of New York Times Bestseller List, Jhumpa Lahiri, but virtually no internationally successful writers in non-fiction, except say Ram Guha whose writings are appreciated in Britain… It’s possible to be a firangi and come to India and talk about history, non-fiction, and travel and be taken seriously…

Lots of great fiction writers in India but in terms of non-fiction, there is less competition – thank god for that, it keeps me in business – there’s Ram Guha. He and I have clashed swords at various points. The Indian subcontinent is producing excellent writers, but there has been a sudden slowdown in terms of the geniuses from this country as opposed to earlier when you heard about a new Indian writer getting a million dollars. The big thing is the amazing richness appearing out of Pakistan, like Ahmed Rashid – his book "Taliban"... India has some competition, at last.
