2,300 IIPM students get jobs

All newly appointed ministers will be assessed on the basis of a 100-day good governance action plan, writes Pramod Kumar

The Indian voters had said jai ho to the Congress, and party veterans were elated. But the young man who shaped the amazing victory, though satisfied with the unforeseen outcome, knew that he stood at the beginning of a long road. The very day after the victory bugle was sounded all young MPs were invited by Rahul Gandhi for high tea in the War Room on 15, Gurudwara, Rakab Ganj Road.

Initially most of them thought that the refreshments were just a prelude to the eagerly awaited announcement of Manmohan Singh’s new cabinet ministers. But they went back wiser. The Gandhi scion said not a word about this, and devoted his entire talk to the business of strengthening the organisation. His own assessment was that the century-old party needed to rebuild itself right from the grassroots.

At the end of Rahul’s speech an old pal of his wanted to know whether he planned to accept the offer to join the new cabinet. The man’s answer was an emphatic “NO”. Said Rahul: “As the youngest members of the Congress, our principal responsibility at this critical juncture is to re-dedicate ourselves to rebuilding the party. There will certainly be some young MPs in the new cabinet, but only those who have the approval of the prime minister and the party president.”

So well, the mind was clear and the message loud. And it has been like that since Day One. One doesn’t need to look far to see how unswerving the Congress this time has been in sticking to its proposed blueprint for the future. Right since the day the results came out, the party’s strategy has been to ensure that the pecking order stays undisturbed. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would continue to lead the government; Congress President Sonia Gandhi to manage the alliance; and Rahul would take charge of organisational matters.

Senior Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai told TSI that at his first press conference Rahul Gandhi was also emphatic about continuing with the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal and giving a completely free hand to Manmohan Singh.

Rahul was even overheard telling Singh at the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, “Till the election results were announced much of it was my responsibility. But now you take charge because I have a very important assignment on my hands – I have to strengthen the party organisation.” A senior minister of the Jammu and & Kashmir cabinet who was there said he had never imagined that Rahul would mature so fast.

The other person who mostly stayed away from the cabinet formation issue was Sonia Gandhi, who did not venture beyond suggesting a few names to ensure the regional balance was kept. In that initial list were R. P. N. Singh from UP and Sachin Pilot from Rajastan; Beni Prasad Verma and Dr. Sanjay Singh had been left out. Verma, who was earlier with the Samajwadi Party, did sound a bit disappointed, yet conceded the fact that the cabinet-forming exercise was indeed impressive.

Who will be responsible if the pension fund invested in share markets suffer a loss?

2,300 IIPM students get jobs

The global economic recession has impacted our economy and the labour sector has taken the blow directly. How will the new government rejuvenate the labour sector?

Our GDP has grown from 4.5% to 8.5%. It indicates our dedication and commitment in providing basic infrastructure. The Indian government has taken initiatives to get rid of unemployment. In the rural sector, we are using unorganised workers in NREGA. In urban areas, they are being employed in construction work. Still, we cannot rule out the fact that the labour sector is slightly affected by global economic recession.

Recently US President Barack Obama declared reversal of tax cuts and concessions for American outsourcing companies. He even mentioned Bangalore in his speech. Do you think the protectionist policies of developed countries like the US will adversely affect labour markets in India?

We cannot blame Obama for this. Every president has to think first of the welfare of his/her nation. Moreover, we are not completely dependent on America. Our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is able and competent. Therefore, I think, our economy is safe due to his prudence.

The Deepak Parikh committee had recommended that workers’ pension fund be put into the share market. This issue triggered protests in the past. Provident fund canalisation to share markets is also in the pipeline. The previous UPA government had plans to allow private fund managers to enter the scene. What is the stand of the government?

It is not the question of opposition from one person or a group. Government will always think about the welfare of the workers and will take decisions accordingly. Who will be responsible if the pension fund invested in share markets suffer a loss? We will never let it happen. Government is just guardian of the employee fund and it will safeguard it.

The practice of employing contract workers is increasing in industrial and service sectors alike.

Some employers think that regular workers will affect production and profits of the company. If they appoint a regular worker, according to labour laws, they have to provide all benefits like PF and other things. Hence they opt for contract workers who do not have job security and other imbursements. Therefore, the government is thinking of a new strategy to assure job security to contract workers. It is prepared to implement the required law and create awareness among contract workers in order improve their condition.

Total or partial exclusion of labour laws from the special economic zones (SEZ) is a contentious issue. Workers in SEZ’s feel insecure, threatened and exploited. What is your view?

In the initial days, most states created SEZs with a bunch of amenities to attract industries. Most states offered competitive prices in providing services and basic infrastructures like land, water, power, tax cuts etc. However, there was no scope for exclusion of labour laws. The UPA government is all set to encourage industries, but not at the cost of workers. No development can happen at the cost of labour.

I Beg to Differ, She is a sad simple woman who sits outside the same temple where her mom used to sit.

Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz

To most of us, beggars are nothing more than an eyesore, but for Lucky, unsure of her age somewhere in the late 20s, heckling devotees outside a temple in south Delhi is all in a day’s work. Thankful for her defective left eye, Lucky is convinced of the adage of ‘ask and you shall receive’…

It seemed like child’s play when I had started, but then everything is at that age. To people, I was a sort of an opportunity to rinse their soiled conscience, by being kind to an underprivileged kid like me. My mom, similar case as mine, had no clue about her dad. She is a sad simple woman who sits outside the same temple where her mom used to sit. I, on the other hand roam about heckling the visitors to the shrine, on sympathetic and sacred grounds. I was a fast learner of this trade and thanks to my left eye (infected since age four and now completely ineffective), I used to beat all competition, even nursing mothers! For the next five years I was the main bread earner for my family including my mom, two elder sisters and a younger brother, but as one gets older, the earnings reduce. I remember I was just seven, when an extremely generous ‘Gori’ (a foreigner) gave me a sweater, bought me fancy food and even gave a crisp five-hundred rupee currency note. My family was ecstatic, as I had earned about twenty days’ income in one! Since that day I was named Lucky and even after 17 years of living off random acts of generosity, I will consider my life living up to my name.

Strangely we Indians can't seem to go beyond flesh.

Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz

But the nude scene in “Rang Rasiya” is at the core of the film. It was my family who clinched the matter for me. When I told them about the nude scene they supported me completely. Otherwise I was very reluctant to do it. Now I'm proud of the fact that I did it. My character, Sugandha, was the first pin-up girl in India. All the calendar art became available to people because printing came into being at the same time when Sugandha posed for Ravi Varma. People actually could bring images of goddesses home. At the same time she got ostracised for what she did. She was truly a trendsetter. And playing her, I became a trendsetter by doing our first nude scene.

But based on current reaction, it would seem to be a disturbing trend to set, wouldn’t it?
All over the world, the greatest directors use actors and actresses in the nude in completely non-gratuitous ways. Strangely we Indians can't seem to go beyond flesh. Ironically Ravi Raja Varma was taken to court for painting a nude. Today 130 years later the same issue seems to have come up. People want to know why the face of a girl who's seen in the nude should be superimposed on a goddess. So, are we - I and the director Ketan Mehta - going to be ostracised in the same way that Ravi Raja Varma and Sugandha were 130 years ago?

100-day challenge

2,300 IIPM students get jobs

UPA ministers have swung into action like never before in a bid to prove equal to the task, reports Pramod Kumar

Dramatic changes are sweeping through the corridors of power. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s ‘perform or perish’ notice and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s 100-day trial period for his ministerial team has completely altered the ground rules of governance. Not just the ministers, but also the bureaucrats under them who in the last days of the previous UPA government had begun to show signs of lethargy, have wholeheartedly embraced a new style of functioning and a fresh set of work ethics.

Scene One: Since the day Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee took over as the Union Railway Minister, she has been paying cash for every cup of tea that she consumes in her office. She wants no freebies for herself, or for her officials. Besides granting fare concessions to needy rail passengers, she has clamped down on the misuse of saloons by Railway Board members. Under the new dispensation, the railway ministry is on a new trip: officials who once thought nothing of ordering cashew-nuts to go with their cups of tea have now begun to think twice before taking such liberties.

Scene Two: Surface Transport Minister Kamal Nath, who was surprisingly shunted out of the Commerce and Industry Ministry that he held for five years in the first UPA government, wasn’t too happy with the development. But when the PM explained to him the importance of surface transport in the government’s overall development plans, the senior minister swung into action. He invited the former NHAI chairman to tea and then sought a meeting with the Planning Commission deputy chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia. Not only did the latter personally arrive in the minister’s office, he even suggested that a separate corporation be set up to ensure that surface transport projects would not hit any roadblocks for want of funds. Scene Three: The new Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has, in a break from norm, decided to part with file-clearing powers, which he has left to his junior ministers, Dinesh Trivedi and Panabaka Lakshmi, with instructions that no file should languish in the ministry for more than a day.

He has also entrusted Panabaka Lakshmi with rural health issues as well as the running of Chandigarh’s prestigious Post Graduate Institute (PGI) of Medical Education and Research. The minister of state from Andhra Pradesh had apparently complained to the PM that she had no work worth the name in her last tenure in the ministry under Ramadoss. Dr Singh assured her that she would have no cause for complaints this time around. She actually doesn’t.

The 100-day ultimatum is unusual – it stems from the Congress’ new-found confidence in the wake of its strong showing in the Lok Sabha polls. Sonia Gandhi has clearly indicated to the UPA ministers that they do not have to submit any progress report to the government. Instead, they must share the success of their initiatives with the public through the media and chalk out their own future.

Senior Congress leader Motilal Vora told TSI that the mandate is for the UPA government to take its unfinished inclusive development agenda forward. It is clear that nobody in the government is taking the task at hand lightly. Ministers are arriving at work by 7 am and so are the ministry officials.

Minister of State for Planning, V Narayanswamy, says his priority would be to ameliorate the hardships faced by farmers, while Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik wants to ensure that the fruits of progress reach the lowest rungs of Indian society. It’s an all-new culture. Minister of State for Labour, Harish Rawat told TSI: “The 100-day target has galvanised the ministry. We are absolutely confident of meeting the challenges that lie ahead.”

Cruise out of control

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

TSI Five-O: History, but unfortunately without the drama

War movies always have to walk a fine line between amplifying the big-bang-big-canvas war action and portraying the things that go behind the scenes and inside the heads of the generals who command it. Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie”, about a plot to kill Hitler in 1944 tries bravely to walk the middle path and ends up, well, middling. To his credit, Singer does do a good job of injecting suspense into a story whose outcome is obvious (the plot failed and the protagonists were executed) and well-known. Nazi Germany and the fermenting sense of revolt among some of the senior commanders over Hitler’s lunacy draws you in, but that’s about where the disappointments begin.

The biggest one is Tom Cruise; it’s said that Cruise was interested in the role of Col. Claus von Stauffenberg (the ‘brains’ behind the plot) because he resembled the German a lot. If only he’d acted as well as he resembled him. The cardboard quality of Cruise’s emoting ruins some of the intensity that an otherwise terrific ensemble cast builds. In fact the lack of character development (so important for a thriller to hold its ground) ends up making the senior men (Terrence Stamp, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Wilkinson among others) appear more as History channel reconstructions rather than protagonists of a key moment in the war in flesh and blood.

“Valkyrie” tells a story worth knowing about and as a purely popcorn thriller, it perhaps even succeeds. But its greatest weakness is much the same as the original “Valkyrie” plot – a lack of definitive direction and intensity.

D R Mehta, founder of the Jaipur Foot Factory helps millions across the globe wish away their disability…

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

The contribution of his army of dedicated medical practitioners, helpers and skilled workmen to the service is most noteworthy too. After the initial check-up of the patient, it takes approximately two days in the making of the foot and about an hour to fit it on. “Renowned organisations like NASA and ISRO have complimented us and have contributed in enhancing the quality of Jaipur Foot. We have designed the foot keeping in mind the minutest of details like keeping it flexible enough to enable one to comfortably use Indian toilets, or offer Namaz etc. The durability of the foot is about three years, after which our patients re-visit us to get new ones fixed. I meet about 100 patients each day and it’s priceless to watch each of them comfortably walk away with a hearty smile,” stated the philanthropist.

In a span of two hours, I had myself watched approximately 50 patients, some being checked by the doctor and some others being helped with fitting their artificial limbs. The accommodation, food and treatment are all taken care of by BMVSS. In addition, the wheelchairs,

calipers and other rehabilitation aids are also provided free of cost. Having been witness to this superlative enterprise, a truly selfless ‘bailout’ for our times, I was overwhelmed by the genuine show of love and concern all around me. Before taking leave, I spotted Raghu Khevan, without his crutches this time, cautiously walking his new limb with the support of a medic. As he turned around to greet ‘Ram Ram’, the happiness on his face, I realised, was indeed priceless…

Madan mohan, In turn, Lata used to call him 'Ghazal Ka Shehzadaa'.

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

He took ghazal to the masses

Madan Mohan was one of the most popular music directors of Indian Hindi cinema. He had worked on 100 films in a career spanning 25 years, churning out some of the most memorable and haunting numbers, specially by Lata Mangeshkar.

Fittingly, only recently, his unused tunes were used in films like "Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo" (2004) and "Veer Zaara" (2004). Not surprisingly, he won a Filmfare Award for his unused compositions "Veer Zaara".

He joined AIR (All India Radio), Lucknow, where he came across musical biggies, Talat Mehmood, Begum Akhtar, Roshan Ara Begum, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Siddheshwari Devi and Ustad Faiyyaz Khan, which eventually shaped his interest in music.

Madan's first big independent break was "Aankhen" in 1950. After this, Madan and Lata Mangeshkar teamed and she happily sang for almost all his films. Lata Mangeshkar was the last word for him. In turn, Lata used to call him 'Ghazal Ka Shehzadaa'. Woh chup rahen to mere dil ke daag jalte hain from the film "Jahan Ara" and Maine rang li aaj chunariya from "Dulhan Ek Raat Ki" are some others of his compositions.

Martin Luther to Bishop

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Individual clergymen always expressed doubts about the policies of the Catholic popes, but by the 14th century, a number of religious reform movements were founded. Most were unsuccessful, but in the early 16th century, several reform movements succeeded, leading to the Protestant Reformation. The name of Martin Luther unarguably comes on the top. Although reformers had many complaints about the Catholic Church of the 16th century, the practice of selling "indulgences" raised the most opposition. An indulgence was a payment to the Catholic Church that purchased an exemption from punishment for some types of sins. The customers were Catholic believers who feared that some sins might go unnoticed or unconfessed. In the following letter, Martin Luther not only questioned the practice but also gave hints of the impending revolt.

To the Most Reverend Father in Christ and Most Illustrious Lord,

JESUS

From Wittenberg on the Vigil of All Saints, MDXVII

My The grace of God be with you in all its fullness and power! Spare me, Most Reverend Father in Christ that I, the dregs of humanity, have so much boldness that I have dared to think of a letter to the height of your Sublimity. The Lord Jesus is my witness that, conscious of my smallness and baseness, I have long deferred what I am now shameless enough to do. Meanwhile, therefore, may your Highness deign to cast an eye upon one speck of dust, and for the sake of your pontifical clemency to heed my prayer. Papal indulgences for the building of St. Peter's are circulating under your most distinguished name, and as regards them, I do not bring accusation against the outcries of the preachers, which I have not heard, so much as I grieve over the wholly false impressions which the people have conceived from them; to wit, -- the unhappy souls believe that if they have purchased letters of indulgence they are sure of their salvation; again, that so soon as they cast their contributions into the money-box, souls fly out of purgatory; furthermore, that these graces are so great that there is no sin too great to be absolved, even, if one had violated the Mother of God; again, that a man is free, through these indulgences, from all penalty and guilt.

IIPM has now roped in the Badshah of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan to host their annual business and marketing quiz,

“Come to IIPM, I’ll see you there” That’s what SRK says to all B-School students as IIPM signs up SRK for a three year deal to host IIPM’s B-School Quiz!

Be it placements at IIPM or its global initiatives, IIPM clearly seems to have remained untouched by the economic recession. At a time when even Bollywood has put its projects on hold, in a first of its kind trend setting move, IIPM has now roped in the Badshah of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan to host their annual business and marketing quiz, for Three years! To be held in association with Planman Media’s magazine, 4Ps Business and Marketing it promises to become India’s premiere B-School quiz event!

Be it introducing laptops and WiFi campuses for all its students or getting leading faculty from Ivy League B-Schoolslike Columbia, Yale etc. or for that matter taKing all its students abroad for study tours in partnership with top B-Schools like Haas, Darden, Judge or McComb, IIPM has always been a pioneer in innovative B-School education in India! In this year of economic recession IIPM has already placed more than 2200 students in India and 45 students abroad! This bold new initiative makes it a pioneer in B-School events as well.

When contacted Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri, the Dean of IIPM said, “IIPM is all about bringing World-Class in terms of educationas well as campus life experience for the students. The IIPM B-School festival, Amaze, is in any case the largest B-School festival in India with huge participation from International B-Schools as well. This B-School Quiz also promises to be a big international event.” Upon being asked on the idea of bringing King Khan to host the event, he said, “Everything we do at IIPM is grand, distinct, pioneering and above all else global. Who else in India can make an event big just by his global popularity than SRK? And to top it all he is perceived as the intelligent face of Bollywood because of his economics education background, his suave marketing skills and sharp intelligence. He obviously was the natural choice. IIPM is honoured and proud that he accepted our request!”. The show will be held at the IIPM campus in Satbari, Delhi.

On his part King Khan says, “I am coming to IIPM and it will be nice to be there!” It will be nice indeed for the entire B-School student fraternity of India!

In Orissa, journos take full time to politics with startling results, says TSI's Dhrutikam Mohanty

Editors’ Power Play

Medium is the message

Orissa is by no means an oasis. In Karnataka, Tejaswini Gowda, a 42-year-old journalist and talk show host on a Kannada TV channel, humbled 'humble farmer’ HD Deve Gowda in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Her margin of victory against the former Prime Minister: a comfortable one lakh. Now rumours are rife that Tejaswini is seriously considering a BJP offer.

Back in the 1950s, veteran Kannada journalists like Dinakara Desai, Ranganath Diwakar and HK Veeranna Gowda demonstrated that they understood their politics well by winning Lok Sabha seats. Diwakar even served as Union Information Minister in Nehru’s Cabinet.

Sanjay Nirupam is today known as a hard-hitting politician, but in the not-too-distant past, he was editor of Shiv Sena mouthpiece, Samna (Hindi). Likewise, Sanjay Raut, editor of Samna (Marathi), is also an MP.

Many stalwarts crowd this field. In Kolkata, Saeed Malihabadi, editor of Azad Hind Daily is now a Rajya Sabha MP. Bihar’s Ali Anwar, a veteran reporter, became a political activist and was nominated by Nitish Kumar to the Upper House in 2006. The other shining example of this 'genre' of journalism is Nai Duniya editor, Shahid Siddiqui, for years with Mulayam Singh Yadav as a Rajya Sabha member, but lately with Mayawati. Like others, for Shahid too, politics and journalism remains entwined.

Undoubtedly, the most outstanding examples of this transition remain Chandan Mitra and Rajiv Shukla.

It is therefore no surprise that even Page 3 celebrities have "PRESS" stickers on their windscreens. They have been told it pays to be a journalist these days.

The West and especially Washington is wary of the 'yes' vote to Chávez's plan to rule forever

Venezuela’s founding father and idol of current President Hugo Chávez, Simón Bolívar, had once famously said, “Nothing is as dangerous as allowing the same citizen to remain in power for a long time.” This week, his countryman and the man who insists he is his flag-bearer, conveniently forgot the maxim when the voters gave Chávez, the right to run for the presidential post indefinitely. After all, who cares about old maxims these days? Didn’t George Washington say “Love thy neighbour”?

Venezuela's second constitutional plebiscite in 14 months was accepted by a resonant 54 per cent to 45 per cent margin; permitting Chávez to run for a third six-year term in 2012 and possibly many more after that. Chávez's antagonists dread that he has it in mind to set up a democratically voted version of Fidel Castro's rule over Cuba. His aficionados counter that several democratic nations such as France permit their leaders to be re-elected ad infinitum.

Legendary for his oratory, the victory speech by the Venezuelan President was amazingly assuaging. Hugo Chávez told his thrilled followers: "We must revise everything we have done in previous years – we have to start rectifying, adjusting, strengthening."

Time to make sure India's democracy doesn't become laissez-faire...

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

For want of real democracy

An important aspect of a strong state is to take tough decisions when the need be, even at the cost of antagonising some, if it is necessitated by circumstances. Alas, tough decision making in India has literally reached a state of suspended animation. And it permeates political colours. So while a weak Karnataka government is more in an appeasing mode towards perpetrators responsible for beating up women in a pub, for fear of antagonising the saffron hardliners, an inept state government in Maharashtra remains deaf to the pleas of the state police for helicopters in their uneven fight against the Maoists or does nothing when some hooligans in the name of cause of Marathis beat up anybody from Bihar or UP. Likewise the central government has been indifferent to the pleas of Armed forces for better pay parity. Well, the government which doesn’t mind waiving off Rs 70,000 crore of public money, lend to farmers, for a so called ‘noble cause’, gives the excuse of lack of finance when it comes to increasing the pay of the poor foot soldiers by a nominal amount. Worse, governance in this country is increasingly succumbing in front of anyone who takes the state to ransom, but pretends to be tough on those who abide by the law or are supposed to be disciplined i.e. the armed forces. Economic liberalisation created numerous business leaders here. Yet the vacuum that remains in political leadership is inhibiting everything else and is making a joke of India’s democracy. If only free market could help in creating political leaders too...

The platonic love story that sealed Kashmir

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

The letters that Jawaharlal Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten, wife of India's last Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, wrote to each other were no ordinary exchanges. In her book "India Remembered: A Personal Account of the Mountbattens During the Transfer of Power", the Mountbattens' daughter Pamela has devoted an entire section to their romance that she insists was entirely "platonic". "My mother had already had lovers. My father was inured to it. It broke his heart the first time, but it was somehow different with Nehru," Pamela has written. And the story she narrates is backed by a wealth of documentary evidence – such as the letter that Lord Mountbatten wrote to her elder sister in June 1948: "She and Jawaharlal (sic) are so sweet together, they really dote on each other in the nicest way and Pammy and I are doing everything we can to be tactful and help. Mummy has been incredibly sweet lately and we've been such a happy family." There existed, according to Pamela, a "happy three-some" – and while discussing the high literary merits of the correspondence, she quotes from a letter that Nehru wrote to Edwina in March 1957: "Suddenly I realised (and perhaps you also did) that there was a deeper attachment between us, that some uncontrollable force, of which I was dimly aware, drew us to one another, I was overwhelmed and at the same time exhilarated by this new discovery. We talked more intimately as if some veil had been removed and we could look into each other's eyes without fear or embarrassment."

Pamela also cites evidence to prove that not only did her father warmly accept Nehru's deep spiritual bonding with his 44-year-old wife, but used it every time he was confronted with the Kashmir problem – one of the knottiest and critical issues during his vice-regal tenure.

Writes Pamela: "My father trusted her decisions implicitly.... And of course, her special relationship with Pandit Nehru was very useful for him – ever the pragmatist – because there were moments towards the end of our time in India when the Kashmir problem was extremely difficult. Pandit Nehru was a Kashmiri himself, so he was emotional about the problem. If things were particularly tricky, my father would say to my mother, 'Do try to get Jawaharlal to see that this is terribly important...' " Did Edwina’s interjections with Nehru change the fate of Kashmir? Could Kashmir have been handled differently?

Nehru never let any of this come in the way of his official duties, writes Pamela. All his letters were written after two in the morning, and were an account of not only his private hopes and fears, but also of the people he had been seeing. Indeed, so enduring was the bond between the two that, even after the Mountbattens went back to London, the two made sure they met at least twice a year. India would unfailingly be on her itinerary every time Edwina travelled overseas. And when Nehru went to London to attend the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' conferences he would spend the weekend with the Mountbattens.

Edwina was 44 when she came to India and 58 when she died in 1960 in her sleep. A sheaf of the correspondence was found by her bedside – the entire lot of which she willed to her husband. "A suitcase was crammed full of them. My father was certain that there would be nothing in the letters to wound him.

However, a tiny doubt caused him to ask me to read the letters first. They were remarkable letters but contained nothing to hurt him," writes Pamela.
