After a secret courtship period of four months, comes the final revelation – Qantas Airways Ltd. and British Airways Plc. (BA) have made public their plans of a corporate marriage to create a $5.6 billion mammoth. And while on one hand, both airlines seem to have decided that undertaking this risky drill even at a time when IATA forecasts a global sector cumulative loss of a mind-boggling $7.5 billion for 2008 & 2009 makes sense, we analyse the trade-offs and pay-offs associated with the deal.

The synergies first. Both the airlines have a largely complimentary global network, with BA's wings spread across Europe & North Atlantic & with Qantas dominant in APAC. In total, the duo would cover regions where 81% of total world air traffic is found. Next comes the 'economies of scale' factor as post-merger the duo would have a fleet size of 474 – the largest in the world! “There are operational efficiencies that would start to look up post this merger,” reveals a BA spokesperson to B&E. The merged entity is thus looking at saving in excess of $500 million annually, by 2010... Now for some hurdles.
