“We did not budget for a time, when there would be no money,” asserts Subramanian. Subhiksha urgently needs a fresh infusion of Rs.300 crore to give their business a new start, but the unfortunate part is that getting funds from the market isn’t a cake walk in the current scenario.

And industry experts believe that the retailer will have some tough time finding the desired funding. Under the new plan, the company also plans to fire some from its current workforce of 15,000 employees (both direct and on contract).

When B&E interacted with Subramanian last year, the company was targeting a store count of 2,300 and a turnover of around Rs.45 billion, which now certainly seems to be a distant dream for the company. Even if Subhiksha is able to arrange the desired liquidity it will not be easy to gain supplier’s confidence. The company may lose some of them even as it starts clearing outstanding debts. One only realises the true value of credibility when it is lost.

The TV is in danger! Some folks thought they needed to buy a new set.

Still, thanks to public service announcements on TV, an estimated 90 percent of TV owners now know something is up. Sadly, this created a deep unease among people who were not affected by the transition at all, like cable or satellite subscribers. Attention must be paid! The TV is in danger! Some folks thought they needed to buy a new set. Quite a few applied for those coupons even though they didn’t need them, creating a shortage. Did I mention that once the government ran out of coupons, no new ones could be issued until the old ones expired?

At this point there are an estimated 6.5 million families still relying on unconverted televisions, and a waiting list for coupons. The Obama administration has asked for more time to straighten things out, and the Senate voted unanimously to postpone the deadline for four months. This shows that legislators of good will can work in a bipartisan manner when the issue at hand is every American’s God-given right to television reception.

Then the bill moved to the House, where quick action required permission of a two-thirds majority. For once, the Republicans got a chance to make their presence felt, and they instantly sprang into action, refusing to allow anybody to do anything (the reason why Nancy Pelosi always seems a little irritable). The House is going to take another crack at the delay proposal soon. If they act, Obama officials will have another four months to resolve all the problems. As if they didn’t have enough to do.

Although the American government comes up with a list of currency manipulators every six months – and US negotiates with them strictly for a fair currency mechanism – Bush cryptically never put the name of China on that list. China has also been taking advantage of its controlled rate strategy to devalue its currency against the dollar in a bid to boost its exports at the cost of American manufacturers.

The only sticky point now is, Obama is not seemingly in a mood to relent even an inch and wants to force China to correctly value its currency. Compared to this, China’s reaction over Obama – ranking him an undergraduate in the global political scene and clarifying that all American Presidents make similar mistakes after immediately being sworn into office – clearly shows China has no intentions to listen to Obama. Given the fact that US has its largest trade deficit with China, it’s clear that Obama is treading a precarious line as non-cooperation by China in trade can further destabilise the already tottering US economy; consequently the whole world. Will the undergrad Obama blink first? One suspects he already has...

B&E: There is news that R-Infra’s EPC business is being diversified. Please elaborate on that.
LJ: We started the EPC division in 2004. Prior to that it was a very small division known as the Contracts division. It dealt with small projects in the range of Rs.5 million to Rs.10 million. When we came in we focused on large projects, say projects worth Rs.2 billion .The management time required to do a Rs.10 million project is the same as the management time required to do a Rs.1 billion project. Our earlier skills, as you know, were in power generation and power transmission and power distribution. These were the three main businesses that we were focusing on. Then as we built our procurement expertise, our construction expertise, and our engineering expertise we watched our infrastructure team doing late night projects like Metro Rail. And so we decided to bring in that expertise within the company to chart that value-chain also.

Instilling confidence, Rob Enderle, Principal Analyst, Enderle Group tries his bit as he asserts, “Just because one firm [Satyam] turned out to be rotten does not mean that the entire sector is a basket of rotten apples.” But doubting Thomases need more, and here’s some proof: while on one hand the big names mentioned above have seen their shares tumbling at the bourses, the other biggest three Indian IT Services companies (Infosys, TCS and HCL) have managed to maintain a steady stock price and investor confidence even after the Satyam scam broke out in the first week of January. Even their financial health (as per the Q3, FY2009 results) paints an encouraging picture, with the top three reporting considerably increased profit margins – Infosys (net profits of Rs.16.41 billion, an increase of 31.4% over Q3, FY2008), TCS (Rs.13.53 billion, 7.7%) & Wipro (Rs.9.78 billion, 11.3%).

B&E: Would the Iranian government accept an offer from a new United States administration for a dialogue without preconditions? MM: Till now, the ex-Presidents or Foreign Ministers of the United States have made a number of statements and raised some very nice offers looking for improved relations with Iran. And we take note of those positions and the nice voice, and some suggestions may truly be positive. But they are not from the administration. We have no means but to look to the White House. Despite some very small changes in some areas, we don’t see any serious changes in the White House. In my understanding, US needs an authentic modification of its policies toward different areas, as I said earlier. If we see such a change – taking matter-of-fact steps and showing the gravity since last 30 years – we have made known that any constructive steps will be responded to by counter positive steps.

Not any more. Sure, the Colossus still appears formidable. Sure, America has a military (open and discreet) presence in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea and Japan, to name just a few. Sure, financial convulsions in America are sending shock waves through the whole of Asia. Yet, Asia is now fundamentally different. For the next three decades or more, Obama will have to accept that Asia will clearly be the engine of economic growth of the entire world, the way Europe was in the 19th century and United States in the 20th century. Brow beating and bullying this Asia will simply not work. Preaching will not work. Double standards will definitely not work. What will work is the engagement and dialogue that Obama promises.

But many former American presidents have promised a new relationship with Asia; almost none has delivered. In recent times, John F. Kennedy promised a new era, but ended up delivering Vietnam and the post-Vietnam horrors in Cambodia where a mad man called Pol Pot butchered about one third of his countrymen.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s first message to President-elect Obama was: “End US air-strikes that risk civilian casualties.” His message was sent shortly after coalition troops bombed a wedding party in Kandahar province, reportedly killing 40 people. There is no indication that his opinion was “taken on board.”

The British command has warned that there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan and that there will have to be negotiations with the Taliban, risking a rift with the US, The Financial Times reports. Issues are already on the table, writes Jason Burke, a correspondent for The Observer: “The Taliban have been engaged in secret talks about ending the conflict in Afghanistan in a wide-ranging ‘peace process’ sponsored by Saudi Arabia and supported by Britain.” A leader of Awakened Youth of Afghanistan, a prominent anti-war group, said that we must end “Afghanicide – the killing of Afghanistan.”

In Foreign Affairs, Barnett Rubin and Ahmed Rashid recommended that US strategy should shift from more troops and attacks in Pakistan to a “diplomatic grand bargain – forging compromise with insurgents while addressing an array of regional rivalries and insecurities.” The current military focus “and the attendant terrorism,” might lead to the collapse of nuclear-armed Pakistan, with grim consequences.

They urge the incoming US administration “to put an end to the increasingly destructive dynamics of the Great Game in the region” through negotiations that recognise the interests of the concerned parties within Afghanistan as well as Pakistan and Iran, but also India, China and Russia. Obama, they write, must end “Washington’s keenness for ‘victory’ as the solution to all problems, and the United States’ reluctance to involve competitors, opponents, or enemies in diplomacy.” Early on, at any number of points in the danger zone, the Obama administration could act to break the ominous cycle of violence.

Adversity is a great teacher, and is an opportune time for some leadership lessons. US Gen. George S. Patton, who won many accolades during World War 2, was famous for his handling of adversities in warfare. During one operation in Sicily, he is said to have told one of his lieutenants that he had complete faith in him. To prove it, Patton went home and, you guessed it, slept! He used to famously quote, “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they’ll surprise you with their ingenuity.”

Not letting down his board’s belief, it seems Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit’s classy ingenuity – and that of his valued predecessors – has not only surprised, but even shocked the damned pants of Citi’s investor groups. Look at their performance on the ingenuity scale – for an organisation that had enviable smashing profits of $24.5 billion in 2005, the six months ending June 2008 have been pure genius – a killing loss of $7.6 billion! With one top US institution filing for bankruptcy (Lehman Brothers), the other (Merrill Lynch) being taken over by another (Bank of America), and the IMF estimate of gross losses suffered by the industry because of the sub-prime crisis crossing a gut wrenching $1 trillion, is Citigroup – one of the worst hit institutions in the US – going to be the next disaster on the West Coast? Boasting an asset size close to $2.1 trillion as on 2008 [double that of, say, India’s GDP], if Citi falls, Patton or no Patton, nobody’s going to sleep again for many months!

I can only conclude by saying that in a country of a billion people where the best of times are just round the corner and corporate India....

And in these times to come, the IIMs will more often see themselves being ranked below other institutes like ISB, IIPM etc, for the media, one hopes, will soon become more educated about business education and learn to question the current unquestioned apparent superiority of the IIMs; which the media currently doesn’t, due to their lack of confidence and due to their inferiority complexes vis-à-vis the brand name of IIMs. Be that as it may, this surely would not in any way dilute the value of the IIM brand. It will only give respectability to Brand India, for Brand India surely deserves more than one good business education brand. Hopefully, it will also make the IIMs less complacent and more dynamic, something many of their ex-students feel is their biggest flaw. I can only conclude by saying that in a country of a billion people where the best of times are just round the corner and corporate India is getting ready for global leadership, it’s only a sign of happier and much warranted times that there are other B-schools like ISB, which can now lay claim to the top slot. May a hundred more ISBs/IIMs bloom and blossom and may each of them innovate newer ways to give better education and to compete vigorously with the others, consequently making the other better!!!

Dabur does not feel quite optimistic about the foods business as it has lower return on capital than the personal and health care business.

Fem will be positioned in the mass prestige category of skin care. In fact, Dabur is so bullish about the skin care segment that it plans to launch a third brand (in the premium category) in this vertical. This segment has stiff competition from brands like P&G''s Olay, HUL''s Fair & Lovely and Ponds & Beiersdorf AG''s Nivea.

Foods is one category where Dabur falls way behind, though. The company posted revenues of just Rs.737.5 million in the quarter ending September 2008, which was just 12.5% of the total turnover for the quarter. The key brand Real juices has stolen a march from Pepsi''s Tropicana, but faces challenges from products like Minute Maid and Frooti, which are priced significantly less (even up to 46.66% for the same quantity), which is (as Dabur laments), because of their lower juice content. Unfortunately, there is no further categorisation in the juices category, and the audiences perception towards a brand like Minute Maid is so strong that Dabur has to work hard to fight it.

Moreover, Dabur is not really proliferating in the foods segment. Real was supposed to launch more variants as announced last year, but that has not happened. Duggal admits the same as he says, "If given a choice on where to spend Re.1 of capex – food or personal care, I would prefer personal care." Dabur does not feel quite optimistic about the foods business as it has lower return on capital than the personal and health care business. But as Pepsi proliferates into health and wellness products, Dabur may face a threat with its measured approach.
