Gas’ping for peace? RIL further announced that it would commence production and sale of hydrocarbon gas in the basin,

The brothers have a bigger dream to live for. Forget fights!

The two As -Ambanis, and Accusations, have almost become inseparable. From telecom to oil, there have been propositions from one camp and war submarines launched from the other… And it is no different this time too. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industry Limited (RIL) struck gold with its exploration activities on September 17, 2008 in the D6 Krishna-Godavari offshore basin (Block KGD6) with the discovery of hydrocarbon fuel. RIL further announced that it would commence production and sale of hydrocarbon gas in the basin, with an initial investment of $5.2 billion. The party was however interrupted by a gatecrasher – Anil Ambani, who decided to put forward a ‘legal stay order’ as the official menu card! As per Anil, (his) Reliance Natural Resources Ltd. (RNRL) too had a stake in the exploration and production activities of KGD6. Legitimate, but then, isn’t it time that the two stopped their antagonistic wargames?

RIL, from its deep-sea block is expected to initially pump out 15 million metric standard cubic metres of hydrocarbon a day (mmscmd) from the block. This figure is forecasted to rise to 40 mmscmd over the next six to eight quarters. “We will play a major role in India’s energy security as we are focusing to be among the top leaders in the world in the oil and gas sphere,” declared an enthusiastic Mukesh Ambani, CMD, RIL. This project would also contribute to a massive 40% of the current indigenous production. On the import bill front, this venture would save a precious $20 billion annually.

22, yet stronger than ever! This record was previously held by 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

This one is James Bond’s 22nd avatar and yet it does not fail to create magic at the box office. The movie is titled - 'Quantum of Solace' and has registered the highest ever first day box office collection in UK with an income of £4.9 million. This record was previously held by 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', that had gobbled a neat £4 million in just 24 hours. The weekend collections of the US Box office too have been a smashing $38.6 million from 2,123 screens and the movie has already claimed the No. 1 position in that market. With its India release scheduled for November 7, 2008, Sony Pictures is expecting that like all other Bond movies, this one too would do good business in India.

ARE YOU TAGGED?! but he also created a web-based rumour clearinghouse to ‘Fight the Smears’.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Those marketer’s are clever dudes... But here’s how businesses track competition via SNSs and hey, your HR heads are using them too

If Roosevelt was the first Radio President and JF Kennedy the first television President, then Barack Obama is undoubtedly the first Internet President that the American people have escorted into the White House. Not only did he swear allegiance to social media early in his campaign, but he also created a web-based rumour clearinghouse to ‘Fight the Smears’. Facebook and MySpace were Obama’s playing field during a long-drawn campaign that levelled rival McCain’s bid to the Presidential post. But we talked about all that in the previous piece. What’s important to note here, however, is the fact that both Obama and McCain not just pushed their own brands on social networks, but also went to great efforts to track each others moves on popular social networking sites, including their own social networking sites viz. Mccainspace.com and My.Barackobama.com respectively. To their surprise, their special ‘tracking the rival’ teams discovered that coveted research about voter moods, opinion, leanings, issues, et al (which once required a set of proprietary quantitative tools to be accessed) could now be done via tracking Facebook ‘friend’ requests and network affiliations; or just by reading scrapbooks on Orkut and user comments on YouTube videos. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Clearly, for marketers, social media is not restricted to just reaching out to consumers, but also tracking and taking on competition. Take the Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts controversy that dominated social networks last month. The latter went the whole hog on Facebook, claiming that Starbucks had an inferior taste of coffee than Dunkin’ Donuts. They even developed a micro website named dunkinbeatsstarbucks.com to highlight a survey which said Dunkin’ coffee was superior to that of Starbucks. Worse, early last year, Starbucks bore the brunt of another Internet controversy when Oxfam Charity posted a video on how Starbucks ill-treats Ethiopian farmers. Starbucks countered the same with another video but the incident resulted in a major dilution of the coffee retailer’s brand equity.

Even Microsoft developed a MySpace style social networking site to promote its revamped Zune (portable music player) last year. The management thought that the social network could create a similar buzz around Zune, as rival Apple had managed to create with iPod. In this case however, Microsoft failed, as iPod had already captured the first mover advantage with consumers. Says Yogesh Bansal, CEO, ApnaCircle.com, “You will find numerous examples globally of how brands are leveraging social networking websites and emerging one step ahead of competition. The trend is already beginning to catch up in India.”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

However, when one considers Satyam, this conventional wisdom gets turned on its head. Satyam seems to be using the CSR act as just that, a CSR initiative and in return not promising any real returns to investors through their efforts. Back in the year 2005, Satyam Computers laid the foundation of one of the most impressive social initiatives with its founder B. Ramalinga Raju and his brothers starting the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) by donating $50 million from their personal wealth.

No doubt, this gesture of donation was well appreciated, and the concept of EMRI was well received & appreciated. But sadly Satyam could not create the much-required hype from this endeavour to its benefit. We are sure all of you know about the US emergency service 911, but how many of you know that Satyam operates a similar 1-0-8 service under EMRI in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, with over 1,000 ambulances and 8,000 people. Satyam has a massive vision for this initiative, with plans to manage five training centres, 25 call centres, 11,000 ambulances, 100,000 personnel, to serve 1.1 billion people across India in the next two years.

Satyam is in fact unleashing entrepreneurial and collaborative philanthropy in a unique manner – combining the innovation of the business world and the dynamic culture of the digital world to bring a transformational change. They have incorporated their leadership concepts (FLCB concept & centre of excellence) into their social acts as well. As Venkat Changavalli, CEO-HMRI explains, “The Full Life Cycle Business ensures that each entity creates value by Thinking, Doing and Communicating to delight Associates, Investors, Customers and Society. Every FLCB has a North Star (Goal) that is aligned to the overall EMRI North Star of saving one million lives a year.”

When we asked Venkat why there is still so little awareness about the path breaking initiative, all he offered was that “it has been extremely popular in these states where it is operational. In fact in Andhra Pradesh – as per an independent awareness survey conducted by a leading research agency – the awareness of the service is over 90% among the entire population.” Well, that sure works well for that population; after all, those who are to directly benefit from the service must know more about it! The issue is how does it help Satyam?

Icing off the cake! Bailouts by neighbouring countries and IMF are failing to prop up the economy.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Iceland's PM resigns on the back of global economic turmoil

Iceland's Prime Minister Geir Haarde has quit office following violent protests against his coalition’s policies that resulted in the collapse of the country’s currency and banking system. But Haarde said his coalition would stay around till the elections scheduled for early May 2009. Iceland's economic meltdown is so severe that Haarde’s Independence Party and its Social Democratic Alliance partners are unable to find even wiggle space. If it was not for the meltdown, Haarde and Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, who heads the Alliance party, would have held on till 2011. Their two-thirds parliamentary majority would have ensured their blissful sojourn, but now, with things deteriorating steadily, the 57-year-old Haarde is the first world leader forced to exit due to the financial turmoil.

Haarde's popularity fell steeply in public ratings after Iceland’s deeply indebted economy fell apart in the midst of the global debt crisis. As the crown (Iceland's currency) fell, the government was left with just one option: to seize control of its three major banks. This crisis has been a tremendous let-down for 320,000 Icelanders, whose rising incomes and prosperity had left them quite unprepared for this. "What this essentially means is that this is a country without a government, so it's impossible to say what might happen next,” says Gunnar Kristinsson, Professor at Iceland University. It is anticipated that the economy will shrink by 9.6% in 2009, while unemployment will touch 7.8%.

Bailouts by neighbouring countries and IMF are failing to prop up the economy. The new PM Johanna Sigurdardottir is asking Central Bank governors to resign and is building consensus for a union with EU. As other options fail, this indeed seems to be the best way forward.

Jobs cuts, during recession become a ‘necessary’ evil; and this is the only quick solution for companies...

You’d do ‘Neutron’ Jack proud!

So do announcements of an aggregate 2 million further drop in global employment count (on a single Monday; January 27, 2009) stand justified as the only short term solution? “Yes, this is perhaps the ‘safest’ and ‘most prompt’ decision at the hands of the decision makers,” thumps Van Jackson, Senior Strategy Consultant and Analyst (Foreign Policy). What makes the case of job cuts stronger is that it is not a very common sight to witness such a move across boards, across industries. It’s not just financial, real estate and auto sectors (the biggest bailout grantees) that stand guilty of handing over pink slips, but companies even in the retail, IT and pharma verticals are making it to the headlines for similar reasons. This recent occurence has therefore proven how it is the ‘demand side’ of the market that is to be blamed for disturbing the equilibrium, which therefore called for a reduction in supply for even maintainence of reservation prices by the companies. And as we consider production economics, a reduction in the ‘L’ (read ‘labour’) factor remains the quickest overnight solution to enforce a production scale cut; hence tormenting job cuts and in thousands! Even David Haigh, CEO, Brand Finance, agreeingly states that, “Companies get hit when salaries become more than the revenue. The current economic turmoil has catalysed the heavy retrenchments taking place in many leading global organisations as they seek short-term measures to cut costs and reduce debt...”

Now for the brighter side of the picture: one party that would be most fearful of the downturn (after the ‘employees’ group) is the army of companies’ shareholders. As per a February 2009 World Bank and S&P report, a gutwrenching $15.53 trillion have been wiiped-off at the bourses during the past 12 months, thus representing a total global stock value erosion of 44.09%! Worse, bourses in emerging markets have been reduced to less than half in value during the given time interval (-51.82%)! Understanding how Jack made job cuts count positively for GE’s stock price and market value, investors and shareholders across the globe can hope that their companies will make the most of the announced and future (more?!) jobcuts, thus giving their stocks a better shot at appreciation. And isn’t the primary objective of a pulicly traded entity protection of its shareholder interests? Isn’t it Jack?

At least two local companies will begin producing mirrors within the year, and another few are investigating developing new absorber pipes.

Solar Energy The center is currently investigating replacing heating oil in absorber pipes with water, so the steam turbine could be linked to the solar field directly, bypassing a heat exchanger.

“Conceptually, this seems so simple,” says Zarza, “but that’s not actually the case. Water boils and then turns to steam, and during the transition phase there could be very high temperature differences between the top and bottom of the glass tube, which could cause it to break.” Heating oil, unlike water, remains in liquid form throughout the process. Scientists have tinkered with tubes to develop one that can withstand these temperature changes, and soon a new three-megawatt facility will be built at PSA to test it.

Fernández of Abengoa’s Solúcar, one of the companies participating in the research project , looks forward to replacing heating oil with water. “Oil is expensive,” he says, “and in theory you can go to higher temperatures with water and pressurized steam, because oil has a heat limit. It’s also more efficient if you can do away with the heat exchanger.” A significant challenge facing developers of CSP plants remains cost—in large part because these plants haven’t been built before. Parabolic mirrors must be produced to exacting specifications, and tubes for the oil must be made of two glass layers with a vacuum between them. There’s currently one mirror manufacturer in Europe and two manufacturers of the glass tubes, one in Israel and another in Germany.

“So when there are more manufacturers producing those tubes, and when there’s a larger production in general, you’re going to get more competition and a scale advantage,” says Peter Duprey, director of Acciona Energy North America, a subsidiary of a Spanish company. He adds, “I think this is at a fairly early stage in its evolution, and with more money and more people focusing on this energy alternative, I think you’re going to drive costs down, just like what happened with wind. In the 1980s it was 30 cents per kilowatt-hour; now it’s down to about 7 cents. I think you’ll see the same thing with concentrating solar.”
Solar Energy
Both Abengoa and Sener are working with other Spanish companies to jumpstart the production of parabolic mirrors and glass tubes in Spain, to increase production, competition, and local access to the necessary parts. At least two local companies will begin producing mirrors within the year, and another few are investigating developing new absorber pipes. “Electricity costs are going up—and solar thermal costs are going down,” says Zarza. “We think they will meet somewhere in the middle.”

'Master'ed by the card!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Indians love imitation, evident by the way we are mimicking the credit hungry tendencies of the West. Sunanda Roy explains why we need to redefine our 'plasticity'...
credit cards “Yes, of course! Undoubtedly!” Those were the words from one executive I know, who's working at an online portal, on being asked whether he thinks that usage of plastic money continues to be on the rise. And on further discussion he showed some foru or five credit cards of different banks and equal number of debit cards on the flip side of his wallet; displaying an enthusiasm uncannily comparable to that of a schoolboy in his early teens, showcasing his latest collection of action figures! Whoever said that there is a 'child in every one of us' wasn't exactly shooting in the dark!

If that is not sweet music to the ears of credit card companies, consider this: recently, the Reserve Bank of India, with its statistics on plastic money, has well proved that with more banks issuing credit and debit cards and with a larger number of merchant terminals in position, the value of plastic money transactions went up by over 42 per cent to a whopping Rs 704.59 billion during 2007-08. The growth is notably higher than the 24.51 per cent rise in the value of plastic money transactions in 2006-07.

Nowadays, customers, whether they go to a mall, a movie or a restaurant, are increasingly tending towards using a card. It’s more of a lifestyle product now, that lets you spend that little bit extra over your ability and pay for it tomorrow. Research has further shown that for cash transactions, one uses the ATM card and while shopping (if the ticket size is small), the debit card is used, and bigger ticket size customers are now using credit cards. The spending culture also has undergone a drastic change. Today the modern consumer is brand conscious and ready to spend money on branded goods. The modern middle class family is also ready to eat out at least once a week and that again indicates an upward trend in their spending capability. Various instalment schemes to avail of goods have also contributed tremendously to the change in spending pattern.

One part of the society is unhappy because of the surge in spending by plastic money, which it feels will have a deep-rooted adverse affect on the economy. The US is one such economy that has been there and faced the brunt of their ‘not-so-discretionary’ spending. On the other hand, those who are succumbing to the lures of consumerism are full of bliss as they are benefiting from the goodies of modern living, besides the advantage of not having to carry cash. Abroad, it is possible to swipe your card in a shop you go, and they give you money, though not possible in India.
