Former Union Minister and RJD MP, Devendra Yadav, is one of the most vocal spokesmen on the issue of the ongoing conflict in Mumbai. He tells TSI’s Onkareshwar Pandey that Raj Thackeray should be booked for treason and anti-national activities
MNS activists continue to be on the rampage in Mumbai and Maharashtra. People from North India have been made special targets. What is your reaction?
Raj Thackeray in order to derive political mileage and indulge in vote bank politics has decided to adopt Hitler-like policies. This is going to affect the unity and integrity of the country. Instigated by MNS cadres, planned attacks have been carried out against the people of Bihar, UP and north India. In the violence, one person has died, many are injured. There is country wide anger against these acts.
Cinema houses showing Bhojpuri films have been targeted, there has been violence against students appearing for their railway examinations, against taxi workers and others. Raj Thackeray has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody. Is it enough?
No it is not enough. He should be booked under anti-terror laws. Because a mentally sick person like Raj Thackeray is going berserk in Maharashtra and the lives of people are in danger. So this arrest is not adequate. He should be booked under tougher provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Raj Thackeray has targeted Jaya Bachchan for speaking in Hindi. MNS activists have attacked Amitabh Bachchan’s house in Mumbai. Despite all this, Raj has been free to do as he likes and has expressed no repentance. Infact he has been justifying all his actions.
That is why I am saying a mere arrest is not enough. Because he has been charged with relatively mild provisions of the IPC. Raj and MNS activists are indulging in what I call neo-terrorism. The way they are intimidating people in the name of region and language is no less than terrorism.
Raj talks of Marathi pride, of people adopting Maratha values and culture. There is a small regional party in Jharkhand which is espousing similar sentiments against outsiders coming into tribal areas. What is your take?
This is a dangerous trend. If this starts happening in other parts of the country, you can imagine the outcome. It is anti-national. The country will disintegrate. The Centre should initiate immediate action against Raj Thackeray and his goons.
Lakhs of north Indians celebrate Chhath in Mumbai. This year, too, there are extensive plans from both sides, to celebrate and to oppose the festival. The situation could turn violent. What should the Central government do?
The government should ensure that north Indians celebrate their festivals peacefully. Their religious sentiments should not be hurt.
The state government has placed restrictions on all cultural activities related to Chhath. For instance, restrictions have been imposed on use of loudspeakers in addition to strict timelines which is being opposed by north Indians.
The Maharashtra government’s policy is vacillating and weak. Everyone has the freedom of movement, of celebrating festivals according to their religious beliefs. The matter is sub-judice. I am sure apex court will take a view on it.
How should the government deal with a situation where MNS-inspired hoodlums decide to take law into their own hands on Chhath? There is apprehension that there is going to be violence.
MNS should be immediately banned so that there is no violence on the occasion. I am sure that if the Rule of Law prevails, if the state is not a moot spectator, MNS hoodlums would be hiding in their rat holes. Marathi vs North India issue is a long-standing one. Surprisingly, it was not discussed in the last meeting of the National Integration Council. It should have been discussed.
