Congress finally gathers guts to take haul in MNS chief

Maharashtra Navnirman Samiti (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, has been arrested for the second time in eight months for his tirade against north Indians and the mayhem unleashed by his MNS sainiks. Police got him in Ratnagiri – days after his men attacked north Indians who had travelled long distances to appear for their railway examinations.

What the MNS goons cannot stomach is the "over-representation" of Biharis in the entrance tests. So the moment these candidates landed at the railway stations, the goons set upon them with a fury that shocked even Marathis sympathetic to Raj's cause. The vandals smashed the window screens of over 30 taxis parked in the Tardeo locality of South Mumbai, damaging other properties and thrashing up the visitors, Deputy CM, Maharashtra, RR Patil told TSI that there was no provision under the present legal dispensation to ensure that such agitators compensate for the losses. Said Patil: "I am going to raise this matter in the Cabinet meeting and get an ordinance passed at the earliest." Meanwhile, Raj has been charged under sections 153, 353, 336, 425 and 427 of IPC, police sources said. In one earlier case, though, Raj was granted bail on furnishing a bond of Rs 15,000.

The arrest of the MNS chief comes amidst mounting pressure on the Maharashtra government to take on Raj and his activists. "The Centre has sent at least three advisories to the Maharashtra government after the MNS attacks on north Indians," Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said. However, Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Raj had not been arrested under any kind of political pressure. "It is simply the rule of law taking its accustomed course," he added.

But none of this appears to have had a sobering effect on Raj & Co; and, if anything, the MSN chief has only sharpened his pitch against the north Indian "outsiders". Days before his arrest, he warned that the state would come to "regret" the "consequences" of its action. "Arrest me and be ready to bear the consequences.... you will have to regret," Raj had thundered at the Bahadursheikh Naka in Chiplun where he had been invited for a public function. "If Raj is arrested, all of Maharashtra will be set on fire," he threatened. Special Public Prosecutor Majid Memon said Raj would spend the night in jail. "No one is above the law," said Memon. "You may be the star political leader, but you are answerable to the courts." Earlier, Mumbai police had issued a two-month gag order under Section 144 against Raj that banned him from addressing the press, public gatherings or leading rallies.

Maharashtra Director General of Police AN Roy said his force would show no leniency towards anybody who tried to politically exploit Raj's arrest.
