Just as Atal Behari Vajpayee was the BJP''s face to come to power at the Centre, Raman Singh is the face that the party sees as retaining power in Chh

“I sleep well because no one sleeps hungry in Chhattisgarh”

Where do you see Congress in this contest?

It is sad that a party that had been in power for so long is stealing the programmes launched by us, like the low-cost rice distribution system. It is we who had started the project of distributing rice at Rs three a kilo to below the poverty line recipients. And now the Congress says it would give rice at Rs two a kilo if it comes to power. The skyrocketing price hike presided over by the Centre has broken the back of the people. Communal passion and terror strikes are pan-Indian problems now, but the Congress is unable to rein them in. However, this does not mean we become complacent about a win.

There are allegations of serious embezzlement and corruption against some top ministers in the state.

These are all baseless, politically motivated allegations. Those who have evidence can bring them to me. I shall have them investigated. The Congress has not been able to pin down the government on any issue in these five years.

What do you think is the mood of the public… have you gauged it?

Having toured across the state, I see the people wanting the BJP for a second term. There is no discontent in any section of the people. From pauper to rich men, everyone has appreciated the developmental work of our government. In fact, farmers are overjoyed that in addition to the Central government purchasing rice at support prices, we at the state government level too have purchased rice from them. That is the difference between Congress and BJP: we purchase rice, they buy up MLAs.

What has been the highest achievement during your tenure?

I sleep well now because no one in my state sleeps hungry. We have sold rice to 36 lakh families at just Rs three a kilo. Also, the people trust this government additionally because of our projects like salt at 0.50 paise per kilo and total electrification.

If you are given a second shot, what would be your priorities?

Top of the agenda is to finish off naxalism in Bastar area. The other most crucial areas would be relief for drought areas and higher amount of rice purchase.

Voters hide, rebels decide?

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

Independents seem to hold the key for next Assembly

With people in the Valley turning anti-election, and rebels dogging all the parties, it seems independent MLAs will play the key role in deciding who takes the treasury benches in this state. People are consciously keeping away from election rallies, indicating the voting likely pattern. Among the first phase constituencies, there is no visibility of an election campaign. Last week, people tore off banners and posters of political parties. It seems mainstream political parties in Kashmir can only hope for a miracle to drive voters to the polling stations.

The political landscape in the state dramatically altered after the Amarnath land controversy. Many consider the situation in the Valley similar to that of the early 90s. However, this time separatists are carrying the sentiments of people in the Valley. On the other hand, Jammu has slipped from the hands of mainstream political parties, with people raging against ‘discrimination in the hands of Kashmiri rulers’.

But the most notable aspect of the polls this time is that with the parties’ decision to field only ‘winning’ candidates, there is an army of rebels, and they could well be deciding the future government here. Surprises are expected from several constituencies due to the division of votes, with rebels staying in for the contest. While some rebels have the better chances of winning independently, several others will play lead roles in the defeat of their party candidates by dividing party’s vote in favour of rivals.

Three of the four Assembly seats in Rajouri district have rebels contesting against their own party nominees. None of the rebels of major political parties -- National Conference, Congress, People's Democratic Party and BJP – stayed away from the elections for Darhal, Rajouri and Kalakote Assembly seats of the bordering district.

So far as noise making goes, the PDP election manifesto – titled 'make Self–Rule happen' – echoes its role of filling the political space between separatist and mainstream parties with its soft separatism agenda. It emphasise bringing Jammu and Kashmir politically, economically and constitutionally closer, foreseeing a "shared sovereignty" of a united J&K between India and Pakistan.

NC president Omar Abdullah released his party's Vision Document for J&K "At the political level, the NC Government will try to convince those who have taken recourse to violence and intimidation as means to achieve their goals to come on the dialogue table," the Vision Document says. Meanwhile, the only party displaying lethargy is Congress despite having ruled the state for three years in coalition with the PDP. Though it is open to elections, the party is yet to release a poll manifesto. While former chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, will spearhead the poll campaign, the party lacks a concrete programme to approach the elections held in an environment of strife.

Man in the Mirror: Kiefer Sutherland

Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The highest paid actor on television, Emmy and Golden Globe award winner, Kiefer Sutherland talks about the new season of 24 and his upcoming film Mirror...

Have you finished shooting the next season of 24?

We're filming at the moment. Because of the writers' strike we will finish the entire season by November. And it will be the first time in our history that we would have finished all 24 episodes before we show one, which is fantastic. That alone has allowed the writers to really craft something as opposed to having to work under a tight schedule. Disappointing as the writers' strike was, it allowed us to make what I believe is the best season of 24 we've ever made.

When will that air?

Well, there's a two-hour movie prequel that sets up season 7, which we shot in Africa. It's one of the things I'm most excited about and that goes in November, and then the season will start in January (in the US). I hope that the two-hour prequel will air everywhere – Europe, South America, Asia, US, Canada – at the same time, on the same night. For the second it airs in one place, it's on a DVD and people are downloading it. I don't care about that, I really don't. But I'd like them to see it on a proper screen with proper sound so that it does it justice. Do you find that taking on something completely different from 24 (say, your upcoming horror movie, Mirrors ) during the breaks reinvigorates you?

Yes. And oddly enough, I've found that I do better working in the break (from 24). To play a different character and then to go back to do Jack Bauer, yes it does reinvigorate me. As opposed to the times when I have taken the break for an off, I go through a very odd process of trying to get back into it because I haven't been working for a while.

Sometimes horror films become all about the effects and the story gets lost in the process. How did you ensure that didn't happen?

Alex (Alexandre Aja) and I got along from our very first meeting. And we talked a lot about the structure and the balance of a film like this. And it's not rocket science, but sometimes what I think is lost is the ability to make a film, where if you took out the scary bits, you still care about the characters. You have to care about the characters and have that balance. And so we struck this deal. I said, 'Look, you've written this script and I believe I can make you care about this man, his isolation, the fact that no one believes him and his absolute desire to protect his family. I think I can make an audience care about that.' But I said 'what I need to know from you is that you can scare the hell out of me..' and he took a long beat, looked down and went 'oh yeah..' in that French accent (laughs). So we knew our jobs, we knew our roles. Alex did a wonderful job and from my perspective, he kept his word in maintaining a balance between those things, but that's ultimately for an audience to decide.

Do you believe in letting the audience decide?

Yes, I do. I was the actor who went to see Stand By Me and thought my career was over. I thought the film was great, but I thought I was terrible. And that's when I learned 'maybe I'm not the best judge of that...' I remember when I first read the script for 24 and I never really read the 'real time' thing. I mean I read 'real time' whatever the **** that means, but I didn't really think very clearly about it (laughs). With Mirrors I didn't think very clearly about the fact that I would be looking into mirrors and performing scenes and that I would have to watch myself act. It was the most unsettling part of the film, but it also gives you a great insight into what you are doing because you start to watch yourself do things that are purposefully manipulative as an actor – things that are thought out and meant. To be confronted with that all the time when you are working was very disorientating; but interesting too.

It's interesting, and frightening, the way the film uses an object that is a part of every day life – the mirror – and turns it into something incredibly sinister...

It's rooted in a potential reality. There are mirrors everywhere and you are sitting there going 'I've got a home like that..' You know I had a tendency when I was a child to tell a lie to get out of trouble. Then came the day when I had done really well at school in that particular week and I got the red star sticker for the week and I took it home and my mom thought I was lying. And I'll never forget the frustration. And everything I did to insist that I was telling the truth made me sound like I was lying even worse! I think, on some level, that has trapped us all and this is just taking that to a greater extreme. At first, no one will believe Ben Carson when he tells them what is going on. I think immediately an audience will understand the frustration this guy is going through. Making the audience personalise their interaction with a story is the way to go.

Assam Blasts - Ominous Bloody Thursday

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

It seems fairly certain that jihadi elements, rather than internal ultras are behind blasts

Harekrishna Deka

ex-DGP, Assam & Sr Journalist

India has increasingly become the target of terrorist bombings in the recent past, with blasts in Jaipur, Gujarat, Bengaluru and Delhi taking the lives of scores of people. Had the explosives not been recovered in Surat in time, and had the conspiracies in Mumbai and Chennai not been detected, the catastrophe would have only been greater. That organisations such as Indian Mujahideen that could in reality be a form of SIMI, and that there is a form of jihad that a section of communal extremists now subscribes to as a means of revenge is becoming more apparent by the day.

So, is there a foreign hand that now extends from a neighbouring country, in so far as the blasts in Assam on October 30, 2008 are concerned? One must mention in this context that the needle of suspicion in India’s blasts over the past months has often pointed to Harkat ul Jihadi Islami (HUJI), an organisation that has its roots in neighbouring Bangladesh. The blasts in Assam have meanwhile been claimed by an outfit called the Islamic Security Force of India (ISFI-Indian Mujahideen). The IM suffix, one gathers, could link the outfit to both HUJI and SIMI.

Significantly, the ISFI is not an organisation that has appeared suddenly out of nowhere. It was way back in the year 2000 that the Special Branch (SB) of Assam Police had gathered evidence regarding the existence of such a group. There is enough such evidence to establish that the ISFI at that point in time attempted to organise the Muslim community against Bodo ultra groups such as National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT), which operated in the lower Assam districts. It was then that the name of Muhammad Mushtaqil, the secretary of ISFI, first surfaced as a terror element who had the support of the al-Qaida and was associated with the al-Omar, an outfit that operates in Pak Occupied Kashmir (POK). One could analyse that the ISFI, which then kept itself beyond the radar of the country’s intelligence agencies used its time to broaden its base of operations. While there were then no established links of the ISFI with HUJI, one shouldn’t overlook the fact that Bangladesh’s HUJI is a creation of the al-Qaeda and that the HUJI called itself the “Bangladeshi Taliban”. One, hence, could believe that the ISFI comprises a sleeper cell of the al-Qaeda.

The name of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) too has risen in various quarters in connection with the recent blasts in Assam. While ULFA has mastered the science of serial bombings, along with that of handling RDX, ammonium nitrate and programmable timed devices, all of which were used in the Assam blasts, one must take into account the fact that the ULFA has never detonated bombs beyond 10 kgs; according to forensic experts, the bombs used in the latest blasts used anything between 30 kg and 40 kg of explosives. Also to be mentioned is the fact that even if the ULFA were to be responsible for the recent blasts, there would be reason to ask if their actions had the sanction of the outfit’s high command, especially when its commander in chief, Paresh Barua, has denied involvement in the blasts. In the years before the Bhutan operations in 2003 the ULFA, in its secessionist form, is known to have largely targeted government installations, political workers and security personnel. That, however, changed after the Bhutan operations, following which the ULFA did take to bombings. Even then, though, the outfit chose as its targets Hindi-speaking people and commercial areas. There isn’t as yet enough evidence to blame the blasts conclusively on the ULFA, till further and more concrete evidence is unearthed in this direction.

The lack of evidence at this juncture against the ULFA would give credence to the belief that jihadi elements are involved in these blasts. Given the assistance in terms of cars, SIM cards and site selection, it is clear that the blasts this time were carried out with local support. Again, while one does not hear SIMI being mentioned, and while the outfit is not very strong in Assam yet, HUJI and SIMI are now blood brothers. Besides this, the seven armed youths killed on the Indo-Bangladesh border recently by the army which said they were HUJI members who could not be identified on Indian soil, showing that they were not locals. Finally, HUJI or not, there is enough scope to believe that they were part of a terror outfit based in Bangladesh.

The bombing plan that was put in action this time is ominous; it would be wrong to believe that one has seen the end of such blasts. Not apprehending the real culprit based on real evidence would only leave open the door to more such attacks that could perhaps be even deadlier. One must remember that a man called Kari Salim had been apprehended in the year 1999, before his terror group in Assam could be activated.

His interrogation led to the recovery of huge amounts of RDX on the Indo-Bangladesh border in North Bengal by a joint team of the Assam and West Bengal Police. This only indicates that there exists in the northalleast of India a conspiracy by the ISI.

At the moment, it does appear as if Raj and his storm troopers have convinced many sober and level headed Marathis that they indeed have a cause.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The fact of the matter is, north Indians have become a significant factor in elections in Mumbai. If you go by the estimates of Sanjay Raut, the 230-odd seat Municipal Corporation of Mumbai has about 60 elected members who are from north India. “We have no problem with that. But we will never allow the flaunting of other cultures and the denigration of Marathi culture. All festivals including Durga, Navratra, Onam and Lori, etc., are celebrated in Mumbai. Nobody has a problem with them. Why do you think the Chhath festival is so controversial? That is because north Indian politicians are misusing it for political purposes.”

But clearly, Chhath is just an excuse for the politics of identity. North Indian politicians are under pressure to be seen condemning the MNS and demanding protection for them from goons. On the other side of the divide, Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray – estranged cousins – are under pressure to be seen as the real defenders of Marathi identity and Maratha pride. At the moment, despite occasional outbursts from Uddhav, it does appear as if Raj Thackeray is winning the battle for the hearts and minds of the Marathi 'manoos'. At the moment, it does appear as if Raj and his storm troopers have convinced many sober and level headed Marathis that they indeed have a cause.

This reporter’s younger brother happens to be an officer in the Indian Navy and stays in Navy Nagar in Mumbai. This oasis of peace and greenery in South Mumbai has hundreds of maids who stay in outhouses and work for the families of the officers. Sohini works at my brother’s place and belongs to Ratnagiri. Her husband works as a driver for a hotel owner in South Mumbai. She watches TV news and is quietly proud of what Raj Thackeray is doing. “Nobody used to bother about us. ‘They’ – outsiders – would keep coming and take away the best jobs. My husband lost his earlier job and someone from UP was hired. In his current job, he earns Rs 6,500 a month, after working for almost four years. Just last week, a new driver from Bihar joined at Rs 6,000. When me and my husband see Raj Saheb on TV, we at least feel assured that someone cares for our interests,” she says quite passionately. Lest you think that Raj has ‘converted’ only the illiterate, this reporter has come across dozens of educated Marathi professionals working in high flying jobs who think that the ‘Bhaiyyas’ are a nuisance.

Hypnosis is focussed concentration such as the intense concentration we have when reading a good book or seeing an absorbing movie.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

What is your opinion on Akashic Records?

Some of my patients have been able to access the state of all-knowing that is referred to as the Akashic Records or what Carl Jung described as the collective unconscious, so I do believe that that is possible. It’s not common to be able to achieve this.

Do you think child geniuses actually carry on from where they left off in their previous lives?

I think that is entirely possible. Mozart may be a very good example. We carry over talents and abilities, not only symptoms, from previous lives.

Has it happened that during a therapy, your patient did not come out of his past life? What measures do you take to prevent this?

That has never happened to me. People who don't understand hypnosis often have unfounded fears about the process. Hypnosis is focussed concentration such as the intense concentration we have when reading a good book or seeing an absorbing movie. You are always in control. You cannot get 'stuck' nor can you do anything against your will.

Is Dr Brian Weiss primarily a spiritual healer or a scientific doctor?

I think both as they’re not incompatible. I still use my medical and psychiatric training, but I am also aware of healing energies and abilities. This is a natural integration that is happening in holistic medicine today.

What is Dr Brian Weiss’ life really like?

My life is quite normal in many ways, but I have been blessed to be a part of wonderful experiences all over the world. I have been touched by being part of so many people’s lives.

How did the experience of Past Life Therapy change you and your life?

I went from a psychiatrist who was very left-brained and intellectual to a much more open-minded therapist. My values have also evolved, and I place less emphasis on the material and more on the spiritual. I’m not so concerned about death because of what I’ve learned from my patients. It has helped me on many levels.

How does your family react to your vocation?

My family has always been supportive. My wife is also a therapist who uses these techniques.

Have you undergone the therapy yourself? What were the results and did it solve any of your problems?

I have had several (nine or ten) past life memories. I wrote about some of these in my books. I was never a famous person; that is a misconception of this work.

I didn’t have specific problems to solve but my experiences did help me to understand what my patients were going through. They helped me to understand my lessons in this current lifetime. I was a priest, a monk, and a student in some lifetimes and I lived in cultures all over the world.

Any message for your harshest critics?

It is very important for us all to keep an open-mind. Closed minds cannot learn anything new.

“Raj ThaCkeray is spreading a new kind of terrorism”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Former Union Minister and RJD MP, Devendra Yadav, is one of the most vocal spokesmen on the issue of the ongoing conflict in Mumbai. He tells TSI’s Onkareshwar Pandey that Raj Thackeray should be booked for treason and anti-national activities

MNS activists continue to be on the rampage in Mumbai and Maharashtra. People from North India have been made special targets. What is your reaction?

Raj Thackeray in order to derive political mileage and indulge in vote bank politics has decided to adopt Hitler-like policies. This is going to affect the unity and integrity of the country. Instigated by MNS cadres, planned attacks have been carried out against the people of Bihar, UP and north India. In the violence, one person has died, many are injured. There is country wide anger against these acts.

Cinema houses showing Bhojpuri films have been targeted, there has been violence against students appearing for their railway examinations, against taxi workers and others. Raj Thackeray has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody. Is it enough?

No it is not enough. He should be booked under anti-terror laws. Because a mentally sick person like Raj Thackeray is going berserk in Maharashtra and the lives of people are in danger. So this arrest is not adequate. He should be booked under tougher provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Raj Thackeray has targeted Jaya Bachchan for speaking in Hindi. MNS activists have attacked Amitabh Bachchan’s house in Mumbai. Despite all this, Raj has been free to do as he likes and has expressed no repentance. Infact he has been justifying all his actions.

That is why I am saying a mere arrest is not enough. Because he has been charged with relatively mild provisions of the IPC. Raj and MNS activists are indulging in what I call neo-terrorism. The way they are intimidating people in the name of region and language is no less than terrorism.

Raj talks of Marathi pride, of people adopting Maratha values and culture. There is a small regional party in Jharkhand which is espousing similar sentiments against outsiders coming into tribal areas. What is your take?

This is a dangerous trend. If this starts happening in other parts of the country, you can imagine the outcome. It is anti-national. The country will disintegrate. The Centre should initiate immediate action against Raj Thackeray and his goons.

Lakhs of north Indians celebrate Chhath in Mumbai. This year, too, there are extensive plans from both sides, to celebrate and to oppose the festival. The situation could turn violent. What should the Central government do?

The government should ensure that north Indians celebrate their festivals peacefully. Their religious sentiments should not be hurt.

The state government has placed restrictions on all cultural activities related to Chhath. For instance, restrictions have been imposed on use of loudspeakers in addition to strict timelines which is being opposed by north Indians.

The Maharashtra government’s policy is vacillating and weak. Everyone has the freedom of movement, of celebrating festivals according to their religious beliefs. The matter is sub-judice. I am sure apex court will take a view on it.

How should the government deal with a situation where MNS-inspired hoodlums decide to take law into their own hands on Chhath? There is apprehension that there is going to be violence.

MNS should be immediately banned so that there is no violence on the occasion. I am sure that if the Rule of Law prevails, if the state is not a moot spectator, MNS hoodlums would be hiding in their rat holes. Marathi vs North India issue is a long-standing one. Surprisingly, it was not discussed in the last meeting of the National Integration Council. It should have been discussed.

Congress finally gathers guts to take haul in MNS chief

Maharashtra Navnirman Samiti (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, has been arrested for the second time in eight months for his tirade against north Indians and the mayhem unleashed by his MNS sainiks. Police got him in Ratnagiri – days after his men attacked north Indians who had travelled long distances to appear for their railway examinations.

What the MNS goons cannot stomach is the "over-representation" of Biharis in the entrance tests. So the moment these candidates landed at the railway stations, the goons set upon them with a fury that shocked even Marathis sympathetic to Raj's cause. The vandals smashed the window screens of over 30 taxis parked in the Tardeo locality of South Mumbai, damaging other properties and thrashing up the visitors, Deputy CM, Maharashtra, RR Patil told TSI that there was no provision under the present legal dispensation to ensure that such agitators compensate for the losses. Said Patil: "I am going to raise this matter in the Cabinet meeting and get an ordinance passed at the earliest." Meanwhile, Raj has been charged under sections 153, 353, 336, 425 and 427 of IPC, police sources said. In one earlier case, though, Raj was granted bail on furnishing a bond of Rs 15,000.

The arrest of the MNS chief comes amidst mounting pressure on the Maharashtra government to take on Raj and his activists. "The Centre has sent at least three advisories to the Maharashtra government after the MNS attacks on north Indians," Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said. However, Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Raj had not been arrested under any kind of political pressure. "It is simply the rule of law taking its accustomed course," he added.

But none of this appears to have had a sobering effect on Raj & Co; and, if anything, the MSN chief has only sharpened his pitch against the north Indian "outsiders". Days before his arrest, he warned that the state would come to "regret" the "consequences" of its action. "Arrest me and be ready to bear the consequences.... you will have to regret," Raj had thundered at the Bahadursheikh Naka in Chiplun where he had been invited for a public function. "If Raj is arrested, all of Maharashtra will be set on fire," he threatened. Special Public Prosecutor Majid Memon said Raj would spend the night in jail. "No one is above the law," said Memon. "You may be the star political leader, but you are answerable to the courts." Earlier, Mumbai police had issued a two-month gag order under Section 144 against Raj that banned him from addressing the press, public gatherings or leading rallies.

Maharashtra Director General of Police AN Roy said his force would show no leniency towards anybody who tried to politically exploit Raj's arrest.

Made of Cow bones

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

A special investigative account of how businessmen use cow bones to make religious statues for higher profits. by Umesh patil & abhishek kumar

Her captivating smile froze even as her eyebrows arched and Preeti quietly asked us to repeat what we had uttered. We were inside one of the more glittering shopping malls of Delhi where Preeti had bought a striking necklace. Her smile deepened into a frown as we reluctantly repeated what we had uttered. With an expression of disgust bordering on revulsion, Preeti yanked off the necklace and went in search of a dustbin.

Preeti and her friends were convinced that the necklace and other trinkets that they had purchased were made of a special stone that made this new kind of artificial jewellery look so attractive and appealing. After almost two months of investigations that took us from Loni (Delhi) to Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh and Jaipur, we knew that the necklace that Preeti bought was made of animal bones. We also knew the shopkeeper who sold them and even the trader who supplied them had no idea as to which animal the bones belonged. We knew they could belong to a goat, a camel, a buffalo and even a cow. It is only when we pointed out to Preeti the reality behind the necklace that she was jolted and repulsed.

There are thousands of shoppers like Preeti who are buying not just artificial jewellery, but also idols of religious deities like Ganesha, Shiva, Laxmi and Buddha, besides religious symbols like OM and Trishul. This is Diwali time and hundreds of thousands of Indians must be buying such idols to install inside their houses for prayers and blessings. This special investigation by The Sunday Indian has revealed that businessmen chasing profits have used even cow bones to manufacture and sell such items.

The Sunday Indian is aware that Hindutva outfits might use this shocking revelation to look at conspiracy theories and start fulminating that Hinduism is in danger. Before they jump the gun, it must be pointed out that the people making idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses out of cow and buffalo bones, and the people selling them, are predominantly Hindu. Religion has nothing to do with it. It is all about maximising profits. In any case, as you read on, you will realise that The Sunday Indian had not planned to do a story like this. It actually stumbled onto our laps by accident.

It's just a bloody bullfight!

Bankruptcies, bailouts, coordinated interest rate cuts et al have become buzzwords in the US and European financial markets, and many erstwhile fast-growing economies across the globe are on the brink of recession. The genesis of the current turmoil, which has impacted the banking domain the most, has its genesis in the sub-prime mortgage debacle. The Wall Street behemoths have finally crumbled; be it Bear Stearns – whose market capitalisation declined by a teeth-rattling 98.67% in a matter of eleven months ended March 17, 2008, losing $17.76 billion of shareholder wealth which was taken up over by JP Morgan for a paltry $236 million, or Merrill Lynch – which was acquired by The Bank of America in an all stock transaction for a seemingly modest $50 billion, or The Washington Mutual Bank – which was sold to JP Morgan Chase for $1.9 billion, or the acceptance of a $85 billion bridge loan by The American International Group, all tales point to one sad ending – the end of the financial entity supremacy and the onset of a long global financial crisis that becomes hard to disbelieve and too dangerous to believe... Financial engineering and innovations are not paying off; in fact, they are creating more troubles. Many would even argue that the banking behemoths are actually up 'For Sale'! Oh India! Why weren't thou forsaken?

The Indian context is as interesting as the US context, dangerous albeit. The domestic market is buckling under the pressure too and malicious rumours are adding a bit to the tattered state of market fundamentals. Who would like to forget the ICICI bank fiasco, so much so that the RBI had to step in to calm down the investors. As a matter of fact, market capitalisation of the nation’s top ten firms have witnessed an erosion of over Rs 1 trillion and the FIIs withdrew Rs 37.62 billion from the market during just the past week. For those who were talking about an insulated India, here is a wake up call – if the Monday blues and tumultuous Tuesdays continue, the India shining story might be India whining!

“Nothing succeeds like success and nothing fails like failure”. The Sensex, often touted as the economic barometer of India, has had a mixed experience of both success and failure in a span of over a year. It was exactly less than a year back (during late October 2007) that the Sensex was leaping forward, creating newer landmarks and in the process creating wealth like how! Today, it is proving to be the anti-thesis to what was witnessed exactly a year back earning curses from many a shareholder.

When local housing crisis becomes a global disaster

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

It only spells trouble for global finance and its auxiliary industries

The financial deepening of economies has become a major dynamic in highly developed countries. It is now spreading fast to emerging economies. The value of Global financial assets expressed as a ratio to global GDP was nearly 350% in 2006 (McKinsey 2008: 11), a ratio that jumps to 450% in a growing number of highly developed countries, from the US to Japan. More generally, the number of countries where financial assets exceed the value of their GNP more than doubled from 33 in 1990 to 72 in 2006. Securitising a broad range of types of debt is a key vehicle for this financial deepening. Government and corporate debt have been subjected to securitisation for several decades, with variable degrees of success. The extension of securitisation into consumer debt, including mortgages, took off in the 1980s in the US. Thus mortgage securitising is not new; indeed, the first mortgage-backed security was invented in 1977, though not necessarily widely used at the time.

While mortgage securitisation is not new, the current phase is an innovation that could play a critical role in the financial deepening of countries worldwide. The mark of this innovation is the extension of securitisation to include sub-prime mortgages and mortgages for low and moderate-income households. This feature makes mortgages available to a potentially vast global market, one that goes well beyond the most advanced economies and the middle and high-income classes. Extending mortgages to low-income households is a good thing – that is when finance can really be a positive social force. But it is not a good thing if the main objective of such mortgages is actually to extract whatever small savings low-income households have and are likely to spend on housing. In my reading there are four characteristics whose mix spelled trouble for global finance and its auxiliary industries (accounting, law, public relations, et al).
